Marek Malik

  • Marek Malik is a Czech professional hockey player, currently playing for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League.
  • Early Years

    Malik was originally drafted 72nd overall in the 1993 NHL Draft by the Hartford Whalers. He continued to play in his native Czech Republic for one year after the draft, for the HC Vitkovice of the Czech Extraliga, or Czech Elite League. In the shortened 1994-95 NHL season, Malik made his debut with the Whalers, playing just a single game. He spent the most of his playing time over the next two seasons with the Springfield Falcons, a Whalers' American Hockey League affiliate. In 1997, Malik relocated with the Whalers as they became the Carolina Hurricanes, then entered free agency after the season.
  • Recent Career

    Unable to reach an agreement to play in the NHL, Malik returned to the Czech Extraliga for just over a season, starting in 1997. He returned to the Hurricanes in 1998 and went on win the Stanley Cup Championship with the team in 2002. Later that same year he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. He played two seasons in Vancouver, then returned to the Czech Extraliga yet again during the 2004-05 NHL Lockout. Malik then signed as a free agent with the New York Rangers on August 2, 2005. Most recently, in 2006, Malik joined the Czech Team in the 2006 Winter Olympics, taking home a bronze medal.
