Washington graduated at Auburn High School where he lettered in both basketball and football. He played wide receiver as a junior and as a tight end in his senior year.

He began his professional football career when he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2000 NFL Draft as a 2nd round pick (59th overall).
