Major League Baseball first baseman Marcus Thames currently plays for the Detroit Tigers.
Early Life
Marcus Markley Thames was born in Louisville, Mississippi, on March 6, 1977. He attended college at East Central Junior College. Thames was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in 1996, and sent to their minor league affiliate. After a successful 2001 season, he was named to the minor league All-Star team by Baseball America.
Pro Career
On June 10, 2002, he joined the New York Yankees. He played seven games for the Yankees in 2002. on June 6, 2003, the Yankees traded Thames to the Texas Rangers for Ruben Sierra. Thames saw more playing time with the Rangers, playing in 30 games that season, before being granted free agency in October 2003. On December 7, 2003, he signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers. Thames split his time between the Tigers and their minor league affiliate, finally earning a roster spot in 2006. He was also a part of the Tigers 2006 World Series run.
