March Madness Scores

March Madness takes place the last few weeks of March and goes into the first week of April. Surprisingly, the NCAA March Madness was created by a high school in Illinois. The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) sponsored a high school boys basketball tournament that was begun in 1908. Heading into the 1930’s the league drew in more schools and over 900 schools were competing. Henry V. Porter assistant executive secretary of the IHSA came up with the term “March Madness”. The name became branded with the sport and competition and now is being used on merchandise. http://college-basketball.suite101.com/article.cfm/history_of_march_madness Meanwhile, in the 1930’s college basketball started becoming so popular, people wanted to see it determine the best team in the country. A group of New York writers came up with the National Invitational Tournament or the NIT. A year later, the NCAA created it’s own NIT Tournament. In the 1950’s the NCAA started leaning away from the NIT and heading toward an invitational NCAA Tournament. http://college-basketball.suite101.com/article.cfm/history_of_march_madness

Heading into the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the Kansas Jayhawks are the overall number one seed. After going 32-2 throughout the season, the Jayhawks clinched a number one seed overall and a number one seed in the Midwest region. Most experts have the Kansas Jayhawks at least advancing to the Final Four, if not winning the Tournament. The Jayhawks are the top favorites to win. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/teams/kaa

Other teams that have a great chance of winning are the Kentucky Wildcats. Ever since John Calipari came over from Memphis to coach the Wildcats, Kentucky has been greatly improved. They were also 32-2 throughout the season, the Wildcats were the number 2 team in the country. Overall, they also clinched a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament in the East Region. The Kentucky Wildcats are another top favorite to win the tournament. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/teams/kaf

Other number one seeds in the NCAA Tournament include the Syracuse Orangemen and the Duke Blue Devils. Both teams have chances to win the Tournament but will have a tougher chance to get through their bracket and make it to the Championship.
