California resident Marcelino de Jesus Martinez was arrested in early January and charged with arranging a marriage between his 14-year-old daughter and their 18-year-old neighbor, Margarito de Jesus Galindo..MSNBC: Father Accused Of Selling Daughter For Beer (January 13, 2009) In February, Martinez pleaded not guilty to procuring a child for lewd acts, aiding and abetting statutory rape and child endangerment.
On April 7, 2009, Martinez changed his plea to no contest, in exchange for reduced charges of felony child endangerment. Arrest
On January 2, 2009, Martinez called police and reported that his 14-year-old daughter had run away with their 18-year-old neighbor, Margarito de Jesus Galindo. Galindo was then arrested and booked on suspicion of statutory rape.After interviewing Galindo, Martinez and his daughter, police discovered that Martinez had in fact attempted to sell his daughter to Galindo for $16,000, 150 cases of beer, 50 cases of soda, 50 cases of Gatorade and several cases of meat. Greenfield Police Chief Joe Grebmeier said that neither man seemed to realize that what they had done was illegal. Arranged marriages are allegedly common in the area of Mexico from which they both hail.
