Mao Zedong (Mao Tse-tung) was a military and political leader in the Communist Party of China and the People's Republic of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. Mao remains an extremely controversial figure, both in China and around the world, and is widely considered to be one the most important individuals in modern history. He is regarded by many as an important revolutionary who defeated Chiang Kai-shek and helped establish China as an industrial and military power. At the same time, he is derided for social programs like The Great Leap Forward and The Cultural Revolution which displaced thousands, if not millions, and led to widespread famine and violence. Tough still officially venerated as the father of modern China, his influence on economic policy and political philosophy has largely been replaced by the reforms of Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, and Hu Jintao.
