Mandarin is the official spoken language of the People's Republic of China and is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is spoken by over 885 million people worldwide and is derived from the Sino-Tibetan language family. Spoken Mandarin, like all spoken varieties of Chinese, is tonal—meaning that pitch or inflection is used to distinguish lexical or grammatical meaning.
