  • "Mancow" is the public persona of Chicago-based radio host Matthew Erich Muller, who combines outspoken libertarian and conservative politics with sometimes controversial "shock jock" humor.

In May 2009, Muller underwent the controversial interrogation procedure known as waterboarding—hoping, he said, to prove that it wasn't torture. Strapped to an inclined table with his head on the lower end, Muller submitted to the technique, which has been called "simulated drowning," for six or seven seconds before signaling for the experiment to stop. He concluded that waterboarding is "absolute torture."NBC Chicago: Mancow Waterboarded, Admits It's Torture (May 22, 2009)

Muller's views in general combine a libertarian defense of freedom of speech with conservative politics, particularly on foreign policy. While he has been an advocate of the War on Terror and a critic of Barack Obama, he has also been criticized for failing to air an advertisement for a Christian organization on his radio show.Worldnet Daily: God not welcome on Mancow show? (August 10, 2003) Muller has been a vocal supporter of Wayne Allyn Root, who ran for the Libertarian presidential nomination in 2008 and ended up being slated as the party's vice presidential nominee. Mancow has called root, "the last great hope for America."Root for America: W.A.R. Story
