Malta is a small republic off the coast of Italy, south of Sicily. It is composed of seven islands that make up the archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The two main islands, Malta, which houses its capital city Valletta, and Gozo, contain the majority of the population. First settled over 7,000 years ago, it has always been a useful port due to its location in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.

Some nationalities are required to have a visa to enter, while others only need a visa to stay longer than one month.Malta has experienced a wave of illegal immigration since its entry to the EU, as people on their way to mainland Europe stop there from Africa.
