Maine Proposition 1

  • Maine Proposition 1 was a constitutional debate by the state of Maine as to whether same sex (gay) marriage should become law in Maine. A Maine Marriage Equality bill had been passed in May 2009 but needed endorsement by the Maine population. Same sex marriage was rejected at the ballot box by a margin of 52.8% to 47.2%, same sex marriages remain as unrecognized by the state in Maine.

    The Maine Marriage Equality bill had been passed by the Maine legislature, and signed into law by Governor John Baldacci in May of 2009.

    The bill had to be passed by the Main Electorate and a date was set for the election of November 3, 2009. A significant no and yes campaign was mounted. The no campaign was headed by the Catholic Church.

    Maine voters repealed the law permitted gay marriage, by a vote of 52.8% to 47.2% on November 3, 2009.http://elections.nytimes.com/2009/results/other.html1
