Maine Flood

The St. John River in northern Maine is overflowing its banks and forcing people from their homes and businesses.

Heavy rain and melting snow have caused the St. John River to rise to 28.2 feet, three feet above flood level, breaking the 1979 record of 27.3 feet.

Concerns over the rising waters caused the International Bridge over the St. John River to close for fear that it could be dragged down by the raging waters. Governor John Baldacci has asked FEMA for disaster response and recovery assistance.
