Mahalo Launch Press Coverage

  • Taking the Hawaiian word for "thank you" to a whole new level, the launch of Mahalo.com, a new human powered search engine created by Jason Calacanis, was officially launched at 3:00PM PST on May 30, 2007. Primary search results for search terms were revealed in a "Top Seven" area, as hand picked results from workers called "Guides" search for the best results on the internet and list them per section on the search page. To the right of each search page is a "Guide Note" which includes information about the page as well as a "Fast Facts" section which gives point by point quick fix information results.
  • Praise for Mahalo

"Mahalo works by giving you search results that the editorial staff has pre-selected for Mahalo use. It’s set up a team of about 40 people to handle this feat. We’ve all had those experiences where we search for something and don’t find anything that comes close to what we need. Mahalo aims to incorporate the human element to search, such as ChaCha is looking to do. And it’s raised a lot of money to do so, with an undisclosed amount of funding led by Sequoia. The best part of Mahalo is the directory-like search results that appear for your query, somewhat like Wikia, with the human element thrown in." -MashableMashable: Mahalo Launches a Well-funded Human Powered Search
  • Critique for Mahalo

"Granted, Calcanis admits that Mahalo is not intended to be a “google killer”. But even in competition for a single percent of search market share, I think they’ll run into problems competing with algorithmic-based search engines. It’s no coincidence that Ask’s new ad campaign claims, “The Algorithm Killed Jeeves." -Search Views by Peter HershbergSearch Views: History Lesson for Mahalo
