Magneto is a fictional character in the Marvel Universe comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a mutant, born with the X-gene that marks him and others like him as a variant branch of the human species possessed of remarkable powers and abilities.

Magneto is absolutely dedicated to the protection and supremacy of the mutant race over baseline humans. In his long life, he has been both an advocate for mutants and a mass-murdering terrorist on their behalf. He does not believe homo sapiens will allow mutants to live in peace.

His polarized ethics stem from a tragic past. His parents and sister were killed during the Nazi persecution of Jews, and he spent time in the concentration camp at Auschwitz. After the war, he experienced the persecution of his Gypsy wife Magda, resulting in his separation from his children.
