Violence with Depth
Although MadWorld contains graphic violence, the writer of the game says he was actually challenged to show how violence could be a bad thing. When he was contracted by Platinum Games, the developer, he actually got contradictory messages about how violence should be portrayed in the story. The development team told him that the main character was "not a righteous person" and that "violence is accepted" in the world. However the producer said "Violence should ultimately be denied in the end."
This led the writer to come up with the idea of the underground televison show, DeathWatch, which is the setting for all of the battles in the game. In an official blog posting on IGN, the writer said, "In the extraordinary world of the DeathWatch games, violence and brutality is not only required, but accepted. However, once you step out of the show, the world outside is ruled by normal conventions. It’s not only in MADWORLD. Haven’t you felt that big contradiction in your life? I would like gamers to play the game so that they can experience the unusual world & its story that was created from these two conflicting orders."IGN: MadWorld Developer Blog: Narrativity
