Comical Violence
Even though MadWorld is an extremely violent game, the developers have said they weren't trying to accomplish the same goals as games like Manhunt. Instead, they wanted the violence to be so over the top that it was comical rather than serious. For that reason, they didn't really worry about the ESRB hitting the game with an AO (Adult's Only) rating."This title is focused on comical violence; it never goes for violence of the realistic sort. ESRB is an organization that makes its call by looking at the entire content and theme of titles so we didn't have the same issues as Manhunt 2. Still, we had an obligation to respond when they cited scenes that go too far. Whenever that happened, we and ESRB didn't clash; we simply had a proper and constructive dialogue about the cited scene," the developers said in an interview with IGN.
The developers went on to say that much of the comedy comes from the game's use of anything and everything in the environment as a weapon. A similar concept has been used to much success in Dead Rising where players can pummel enemies with shopping carts, potted plants and patio umbrellas.IGN: MadWorld Adding Humor to Violence
