Mad Cow Disease, is the colloquial term for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). Mad cow disease is a degenerative neurological disease that causes the brain, spine and nervous system to irreversibly degenerate. The disease appears to be caused by infected proteins known as prions. Once transferred to a human, the disease is known as the rare variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

Spanish Doctor Dies
A pathologist in Spain, who specialized in mad cow disease, died on March 28, 2009. The doctor's name was not released but he was the head of pathology in the University Hospital Principe de Asturias, near Madrid. While the origin of BSE is heavily debated, the most commonly believed theory is that cows were first infected with the disease after being fed food contaminated with scrapie-infected sheep meat-and-bone meal.
