Slavic tribes settled in what is present day Macedonia during the 6th Century. The region was conquered by the
Ottoman army during the 15th century and remained part of their empire for over 500 years. During the
First Balkan War the area was captured by
Serbia. In
1929 the kingdom was officially renamed the Kingdom of
Yugoslavia and divided into provinces. On
September 8, 1991 the Socialist Republic of Macedonia attempted to gain its independence from Yugoslavia and rename itself the Republic of Macedonia.
