    Born into a poor family, Lula da Silva received little formal education and worked as a shoeshine, street vendor, and eventually a metal worker in an automobile factory. He became an active union member and, in 1978, was elected President of the Steel Worker's Union. He entered politics as a founding member of the Workers' Party and fought to establish direct elections in Brazil. As president, Lula da Silva has focused on combating malnutrition in Brazil, and has established himself as a foreign policy pragmatist, cultivating Brazil's relationship with both George W. Bush and Hugo Chavez.
