LSU Tigers Men's Basketball

  • The LSU Tigers Men's Basketball has a long tradition of excellence in NCAA basketball competition. Competing in the west division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) they have won or shared nine regular season championships. In the NCAA Tournament the LSU has made 19 appearances, including nine 'Sweet Sixteen', six Elite Eight's, and four trips to the Final Four. Their most recent March Madness appearance was a loss, (59-45) to UCLA in the 2006 Final Four.

The LSU program has produced some memorable players. Among them three time All-American Peter "Pistol Pete" Maravich. Maravich still holds the NCAA Division I scoring record, averaging 44.2 points per game for the 83 games of his college career. Maravich managed this in spite of the fact that he played before the three-point shot was introduced and before freshmen were allowed to complete at the varsity level. Current NBA players include Shaquille O'Neal of the Phoenix Suns, Tyrus Thomas of the Chicago Bulls, Glen Davis of the Boston Celtics and Stromile Swift of the Memphis Grizzlies.

The 2007-2008 season was a challenging one for the Tigers' basketball program. After a slow start former head coach John Brady was fired in the middle of his 11th season without notice. Assistant coach Butch Pierre was appointed interim head coach for the balance of the season. The Tigers went 5-5 under Coach Pierre, losing 77-73 in the first round of the SEC Tournament to end the season.
