Love Canal was a small blue-collar suburban community in Niagara Falls, New York, that was built on a heavy metal chemical waste dump. The Hooker Chemical company dumped approximately 22,000 tons of mixed chemical wastes between 1942 and 1953. The Love Canal School Board purchased the land in 1953 for $1 and built a school.
