• On April 8, 2008, the Louisiana State Senate committee unanimously approved a bill proposed by Senator Nick Gautreaux that would require sex offenders to undergo chemical castration, or opt for physical castration. Bill 144 will be passed on to full Senate for debate. Bill 144 would call for sex offenders to undergo chemical castration upon conviction, although they would have the option to be voluntarily physically castrated. The chemical used for castration is medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). MPA is the main ingredient in the contraceptive Depo-Provera, studies have found it to decrease sexual aggression in men.

  In addition, Bill 143 which prohibits sex offenders from distributing candy or gifts on holidays, to anyone 18 or younger was also passed.
