Every spring, the Los Angeles Marathon snakes its way through the streets of Los Angeles, California, and adjacent communities. The reason for the season is because the original date, late in May, was found to be too hot. In 2010, the marathon was held on March 21. On that day, the runner from Kenya, Wesley Korir, defended his 2009 title and impressively won the race. Kenyan runner Laban Moiben won the race in 2008.
The first Los Angeles Marathon was held in 1986. It followed on the heels of the momentum surrounding the 1984 Olympics, which were held in Los Angeles. The first marathon had 10,000 contestants. This set the record as the largest “inaugural marathon” in history. Over the years, the course has changed a few times. The 2010 course was nicknamed "Stadium to the Sea." The starting line was in the greater Los Angeles area and the finish line at the coastline of the Pacific Ocean.http://www.adventure-marathon.com/Los-Angeles-Marathon.aspx
Along the route of the race, many festivities take place. Music, dance and other entertainment help boost the spirits of the runners. The spectators also benefit and tend to stay longer. The crowd is estimated at 1,000,000 with 26,000 participants. The Acura LA Bike Tour also takes place on the day of the race. An estimated 15,000 people bike through the car-free streets.
