Lopez Obrador is a former mayor of Mexico City who holds influences with the Mexican political party, the Party of Democratic Revolution (PRD). He is a vocal critic of current President, Felipe Calderon. Obrador's protege Alejandro Encinas is also a critic of Calderon, and is fighting to become leader of the PRD.
Contested Election
He was a popular candidate in the 2006 presidential election but lost to Felipe Calderon by only 243,934 votes—only 0.6% of he electorate.NPR: Calderon Claims Slim Victory in Divisive Election (July 6, 2006) Because of the narrow margin by which he lost, Obrador continues to publicly question the legitimacy of Calderon's presidency.
