Long Island Typhoid Warning

  • In mid-March, 2008, a health advisory was issued by officials in Nassau County, on New York's Long Island, after a food handler in Hicksville was diagnosed with Typhoid Fever. The disease is common worldwide, although rare in industrialized countries, and the bacteria which cause it (Salmonella enterica) are transmitted by ingesting food or water contaminated with feces from an infected person. The Nassau County Department of Health has inspected the restaurant and has said that the public health risk appears low, but because the disease can be deadly if not treated, officials have urged anyone who might have been exposed to contact a physician.
