The Lollapalooza festival was designed as a platform for non-profit organizations and political groups, featuring a variety of creative performances and attractions. Lollapalooza was first conceived in 1990 by Jane's Addiction frontman, Perry Farrell, as a farewell tour for the band.http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/07/13/tem_wwwtem1ahist13.html Farrell worked in conjunction with tour and event producers Ted Gardener, Marc Geiger, and Don Muller, holding the first Lollapalooza festival tour in the United States and Canada, in 1991. One unique feature of the festival was its inclusion of other creative performances outside of music, like a freak show performance featuring the Jim Rose Circus Side Show in 1991. Visual artists were given space to display their work, and political and non-profit groups were allowed to distribute materials. As the festival gained in popularity, it was expanded to include more creative attractions and multiple stages were added to the show, allowing unknown and local bands to perform.http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/07/13/tem_wwwtem1ahist13.html
The festival continued to be held yearly until 1997, featuring notable artists such as: Metallica, The Smashing Pumpkins, rapper Ice-T, and The Prodigy. Lollapalooza declined in popularity, and in 1998 when no headliner would agree to sign on, the festival was cancelled.http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/07/13/tem_wwwtem1ahist13.html
The tour was revived in 2003, when Jane’s Addiction made a come back. The 2003 tour suffered from poor ticket sales, and the 2004 tour was subsequently canceled. In 2005, Perry Farrell partnered with the C3 Presents concert organizers to produce a show in Chicago, Illinois. The two-day festival was held in Chicago’s Grant Park. The festival was successful in drawing in thousands of spectators, and a five-year, $5 million deal was signed to keep the festival in Grant Park until 2011. http://www.lollapalooza.com/
