  • Plot Synopsis

    Professor Humbert Humphrey, played by James Mason, travels to a teaching post in rural America where he takes a room in a boarding house owned by Charlotte Haze, played by Shelley Winters, and her flirtatious teenage daughter, Lolita, played by Sue Lyons. Humbert immediately falls for Lolita, even marrying Charlotte to stay close to the girl when Lolita goes away for summer camp.

    Charlotte inevitably discovers her husband's obsession with Lolita. Distraught, she runs into traffic and is killed. Humbert retrieves Lolita from summer camp and the two begin a sexual relationship. Several months later, Lolita is kidnapped, and Humbert doesn't find her for many years, and only once she is happily ensconced in a new life.
