Lola Montes is a 1955 movie, directed by Max Ophuls, that is based on accounts of the life of Eliza Rosanna Gilbert. It was Orphuls' last film.
Screenplay
The film's credits describe the movie as being based on a novel by Cecil Saint-Laurent. Cecil Saint-Laurent (the pen name of author Jaques Laurent) was a best-selling author who had been hired to write the screenplay for the film. Ophuls didn't use Saint-Laurent's screenplay, however, preferring the script that he had developed with Annette Wademant. The production company wanted to capitalize on Saint-Laurent's name recognition, so they credited him with authoring a non-existent novel.Senses of Cinema: Lola Montes (March 2006)
