LiveJournal is a free blogging and social networking site. Founded in 1999. LiveJournal was one of the first blogging services to reach a large audience and is considered to be one of the larger successes of the "Web 1.0" movement. Since its inception over 15 million journals have been created by users of the site.
Purchase by Six Apart:
In January of 2005 Six Apart purchased Live Journal from its creator Fitzpatrick. Unable to keep up with the administrative work of the web site Fitzpatrick told users the sale was needed to keep the web site going. He also reassured users that Six Apart would respect the current core values of the service.
Purchase by SUP:
In December of 2007 it was announced that Russian company SUP had acquired LiveJournal. Previously the two had worked together on a licensing deal which raised some concerns by the many LiveJournal users. After the sale some users reacted unfavorably, they felt the growing Russian user base would be targeted in cases where they spoke negatively about their current political administration.
