  • Career Overview

Founding members Lowell George and Bill Payne met one another while auditioning for Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. There are divergent accounts of how this initial meeting came about.

The band's first two albums, released in 1971 and 1972, were both critically praised, and the single "Willin'" - allegedly rejected by Zappa - became a significant hit. The band split up when founding member Roy Estrada left to join Captain Beefheart's Magic Band but regrouped the following year.

In the late 1970s, the band's sound began to turn more towards jazz fusion, and George had less of a commanding role in songwriting. He died of a heart attack in an Arlington, Virginia hotel room in June of 1979, an apparently result of his lifelong struggles with obesity and chronic drug use. He was 34 years old.

The band broke up after George's death, and regrouped in 1988 with new lead singer Craig Fuller]. Fuller himself would be replaced by Shaun Murphy in 1993. The band's last new album was released in 2003, but they continue to produce live albums and tour.
