  • Lisa Nowak is a former NASA astronaut and U.S. Navy officer. In 2007, she was accused of attempted kidnapping, burglary and battery against Air Force engineer, Colleen Shipman, whom she believed was a romantic rival in her relationship with Bill Oefelein.

Nowak initially reserved the right to use an insanity defense to the charges, but withdrew that motion on May 15, 2009.FOX News: Ex-Astronaut Lisa Nowak Withdraws Insanity Plea

  • Scandal

On February 5, 2007, Nowak was arrested in Orlando, Florida, for attempted kidnapping (among other charges). She had driven from Houston, Texas, to confront Colleen Shipman, the girlfriend of Bill Oefelein. Nowak claimed to have had a relationship with fellow-astronaut Oefelein, and allegedly attacked Shipman with pepper spray through her car window. Nowak reportedly wore diapers on the 1,000-mile trip, to avoid the need to stop to use the restroom, but she denied those reports. In October 2008, an appeal was heard by the court, that could mark critical evidence found in Novak's car as non-admissible towards the trial. It remains unclear when appeals court will make a judgment on the evidence.
  • Trial

On April 13, 2009, Nowak's lawyer filed a motion stating that the charges against her should be dropped. They claim that the prosecutors did not produce the evidence which they had in their possession, that would clear Nowak from the pepper spray charges.Orlando Sentinel: [1] (April 14, 2009)
