    • Also known as the Turkey Fish, Dragon Fish, and Scorpion Fish
    • The Radiata Lionfish is the most venomous
    • Size: 11 to 15 inches
    • First classified in 1758
    • Lifespan: Up to 15 years
  • Lionfish are members of the Scorpaenidae family characterized by their brightly colored, striped bodies and radiating, venomous spines.
  • Habitat

Native to the Western Indo-Pacific, various species of lionfish can be found in warm waters virtually worldwide and have recently been observed in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of the United States.
  • Behavior

Nocturnal hunters, lionfish prefer to hide, camouflaged during the day among corals or rocks. They are most active during sunset, when they hunt for the small fish or shrimp that comprise their diet. Lionfish will often use their many fins to herd their prey into a corner, and then swallow it whole.
  • Popular Pets

Although they are harvested in some areas for food, the lionfish is much more popular among aquarists. They are not recommended for inexperienced fish keepers, as they are apt to eat their smaller tank mates if given the chance and can cause injury with their venomous spines.
