Linux is a operating system kernel, but also the term that designates the various operating systems that run on top of the Linux Kernel, depending on the context in which you find the reference. Developed under the GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2), the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone and it is one of the most prominent examples of open source software. Linux is the most popular alternative to the two major operating system families, Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X.

GNU operating system
The main thing part that is original about Linux is the Linux Kernel, the central part of the software that controls other programs, networking, access, device drivers, and various other things. Many other functions are handled by components from the GNU Operating System. Some have proposed that Linux be referred to as GNU/Linux due to its moderate use of GNU operating system elements. -
