The McGurk Effect
The McGurk effect is a linguistic phenomenon first discussed by linguists Harry McGurk and John MacDonald. The theory states that understanding speech often has a visual component. That is, if something is heard without seeing the speaker's lips, it can be interpreted differently than if the speaker's lips can be seen.University of Califorina Riverside: McGurk Effect A video demonstrating the McGurk effect has been making the rounds on YouTube.
