Fast Facts
- Dates to the 1840s
- Matured in the 20th Century
- Devoted to theory of linear structure
- Applicable to natural and social sciences
- Not technically an algebra
-
Applications
Linear algebra can be applied any field where systems of linear equations are used. This includes predicting traffic flow, cryptography, graph theory, genetics and electrical circuits. -
History
The origins of linear algebra trace back to when William Rowan Hamilton introduced quaternions as a three dimensional description of mechanics in 1943. In 1857, Arthur Cayley unveiled the concept of matrices but it was not until the 20th Century that these ideas were further developed into the more complete theory of linear algebra. -
