Linear Algebra

Categories: Science | Mathematics
  • Linear algebra is a branch of mathematics that deals with systems of linear equations. Other topics include vectors, vector spaces and linear maps.
  • Applications

Linear algebra can be applied any field where systems of linear equations are used. This includes predicting traffic flow, cryptography, graph theory, genetics and electrical circuits.
  • History

The origins of linear algebra trace back to when William Rowan Hamilton introduced quaternions as a three dimensional description of mechanics in 1943. In 1857, Arthur Cayley unveiled the concept of matrices but it was not until the 20th Century that these ideas were further developed into the more complete theory of linear algebra.
