Libya Releases HIV Medics

  • On July 24, 2007, after 8 years in prison, the Libyan government released six Bulgarian medical workers who were given life sentences for allegedly infecting children with HIV. The medics, who have maintained their innocence, received a pardon from President Georgi Parvanov upon their return to Bulgaria.

    The release of the six prisoners came as a part of negotiations between Libya and the European Union. The release of the Bulgarian medics is seen as a major step towards normalizing the relationship between Libya and EU member states.
