In January 2008, the United States Library of Congress began a program to upload images from their photo vault to popular online photo sharing website Flickr. The Library of Congress says that it launched the program to allow the images to reach a wider audience of viewers that might not regularly visit the photo archives on the Library of Congress website.Library of Congress: Library of Congress Photos on Flickr

The Commons on Flickr
Coinciding with the launch of the Library of Congress Photos on Flickr project, Flickr began a new program of their own called "The Commons".
