• English author and poet Lewis Carroll captivated readers for over a century with his whimsical and fantastic tales. What is less known is that Carroll was also a professional photographer and minister.
  • Background

Lewis Carroll was born on January 28, 1832, under the name Charles Lutwidge Dodson. His parents were first cousins who had married in 1827. His father, also named Charles, was a minister in a small country parsonage. He was raised in a very conservative home in the admonition of the Anglican church.
  • Personal Life

Lewis Carroll moved to Croft, England in 1843. In 1850 he was admitted into Christ Church in Oxford. He completed his Bachelor of arts in 1854 and began working as the assistant librarian for the church the following year, as well as teaching mathematics. In 1856 he began pursuing photography, and had occasion to meed Alice Liddell for the first time. He completed his Master of Arts in 1857 and was ordained as a Deacon in the church in 1861. He resigned his mathematical lectureship in 1881 and died in 1898.
  • Controversy

The two major criticisms of Lewis Carroll stem from his fantastical tales and his photography. Some critics claim that Carroll was a user of drugs, which fueled his imagination when writing. Others have claimed that he was a man with an abnormal fascination for the pre-pubescent female form. His photography contains many nude images that today would be considered an inappropriate art form for children of that age group.
