Leonard Bernstein

Life

Leonard Bernstein was the first conductor and composer educated in the United States to receive international acclaim and recognition. He was musical director of the New York Philharmonic from 1958 - 1969, and his association with that orchestra continued throughout his life. Bernstein popularized classical music through a number of television appearances, including the PBS series Young People's Concerts.

Bernstein's works include West Side Story and Candide. He also composed 15 other musicals and operettas, 16 orchestral works, and a number of choral and chamber pieces.

Bernstein died of pneumonia and a pleural tumor five days after retiring.
