Brief Background
Legolas is a fictional character in Middle-earth. He is the son of Thranduil, king of the Silvan Elves. Legolas was sent to the kingdom of Elrond in Rivendell on an errand, and it was there that he joined the Fellowship of the Ring.
Once the fellowship fell apart in the second book, The Two Towers, Legolas joined Gimli and Aragorn on their quest to save Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck. Despite the ancient antagonism between Elves and Dwarves, Legolas and Gimli build a strong friendship over the course of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
