  • History

Lego founder Ole Kirk Christiansen began as a carpenter, but moved into toymaking in 1932. In 1934 he christened his company Lego. They began working with types of interlocking plastic bricks in 1949, but did not hit on the current design until 1958. The product line has since been extended, with action figures, themed sets, electronic and computer programmable elements (Lego Mindstorms) and tie-ins to media properties.http://cache.lego.com/downloads/aboutus/LEGO_company_profile_UK.pdf
  • The LEGO Brick

The modern Lego brick was patented in 1958 (see Lego 50th Anniversary). It consists of studs on top and tubes on the hollow underside. The studs are slightly larger than the spaces among the tubes and walls, creating a tight fit. This is known as an "interference fit" and is held together by friction without any extra fasteners.http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/lego.htm

  • LEGO Minifigures

In 1978, the modern minifigure was born. They were part of the shift towards role playing. Currently, approximately 4 billion of these plastic people have been made. Originally, Lego minifigures came in different themes but all had yellow skin and neutral faces. Starting in 1989 with Lego pirates, more detailed facial features were added. Many characters have since been produced, including licensed themes, such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. Most of the licensed characters have replaced the yellow skin with a more realistic color.http://cache.lego.com/downloads/aboutus/LEGO_company_profile_UK.pdf http://gizmodo.com/5070884/exclusive-the-lego-minifig-timeline
