The Beginning - Kokiri Woods
- The game begins with a cut scene in which we meet Link, the game's main protagonist.
- Watch the cut scene. After it ends, you get control of Link. Move him using the analog stick and exit the house.
- Link will talk to Saria. If you try to go to Deku Tree - the big wide thing on the map, you'll only find out that you can't exit the place as long as you don't have a sword and a shield. Your next objective is to get them.
- Check your map. Go to the western area of town, up the fencing hill. The place is called Forest Training Center. Find your way through fences and a small hole in the end. Enter it by pressing A. After you're there on the other side prepare to run behind the moving boulder. After the boulder passes just run behind it. Go to the left, then to the right. You'll see a chest, press A to open it. Congratulations, you just found your first sword.
- Exit the place same way you entered it. Play with the sword a bit. Press B to attack. Get some rupees by cutting grass, throwing stones etc. To grab items, just approach them and press A. Press B to throw them. A quick way to earn some rupees is by jumping across the platforms in the water near the shop.
- Once you got 40 rupees, enter the shop. Buy the Deku Shield and don't forget to equip it. You can equip it on the start menu - press Start to enter it.
- Go to Mido, this time he'll let you pass. Just follow the way, kill some creatures with your newly acquired sword. Grab some Deku Sticks and meet the Deku Tree.
- Watch the cut scene. Enter the tree's mouth.
Inside the Deku Tree
- You enter a large area infested by monsters. The enemies you see near the starting point are Deku Babas. Attack them, you should get some Deku Nuts and Deku Sticks but keep in mind that these enemies will regenerate.
- TIP: Always cut the grass! Cutting the grass will earn you some easy money + you get the hearts to replenish your health.
- The only way is to go up. Climb the wines. After you're on top, keep heading right. On the way, you'll find a chest which contains Dungeon map. Every dungeon has these.
- Enter the door on the end of the path. Inside is the monster that will spill nuts at you. You need to deflect these to his face using the shield - pressing R. After that's been done, just run to him. When caught, he'll unlock the door. Enter the room.
- Jump across the platforms - quickly. On the other side you'll find a chest with Fairy Slingshot. Equip it. Turn around and look at the unreachable door. Use the slingshot to hit the ladder. It will fall down and enable you to get back to the main room.
- TIP: When attacking the enemies, focus on them by holding the Z button. This will enable you to auto-aim your slingshot shots too.
- Go down a bit to the place where you can see some vines. You can climb on the wall. However before you try to climb it use the slingshot to attack spiders crawling on the wall. Now you can use the vines to get to the upper floor. Go to the right, ignore the big spiders and enter the door.
- Jump on the button to bring the platforms up. Quickly jump over the platforms to get to the opposite side. There you'll find the Compass. It will reveal the locations of all unopened chests and the location of dungeon's boss. If you jump from the platforms on the enclave on the left you'll mark how a spider - Skulltula appears down the ceiling. Kill him by using the slingshot and get the token. These will be used later in the game but are fully optional. To exit the room equip the Deku Stick and get it near the burning torch. Now, go to the door and open the passage. Be careful that your Deku Stick does not burn away.
- Now go to one of the three openings in the spider web. A big spider will appear. Don't attack him until he turns his back to you. Then attack and kill him. Peer over the edge back to the first floor. Jump over the edge - you'll land on a big spiderweb in the first room of the dungeon. If done correctly, you'll fall through it and find yourself in a new room.
- Climb onto the ledge with the button switch. Use the switch to light the torch behind you. Light your Deku Stick and get it through the shallow water to the other side. Light the spider web and get through the door. Note: On the web to get to the upper floor there is another Skulltula. The third one is on the watergate. Kill it with slingshot.
- TIP: You'll know when a Skulltula enemy is close by hearing the noise he makes when Link is close to him. It's a sound of a spider crawling.
- In the new room there is another deku monster. Just use the shield to reflect the nuts back to him. Catch him and he'll tell you the way to defeat his brothers - 2-3-1. That's the order you'll have to defeat them in, from right to left. Use your slingshot to shoot the eye switch above the locked door.
- As you enter the next room Navi will tell you about diving. Get in water, dive and press the switch to lower the water level. Even if it's timed, don't worry, you'll have enough time to get to the other side. Defeat the spider. Move to block under the door and climb it. In the next room kill the Babas light the unlit torches and proceed to the next room.
- IBe careful around the enemies. Larvas will drop if you run underneath them. Light the torch and fire the webs. One will lead to a dead end and another to a crawlspace. Go through the crawlspace to reach a room you were previous in. Move the block into the water and use the newly created bridge to get to the other side. Light your Deku Stick and get to the web fast. Roll over it to put it on fire. You'll finish up in the lowest level of the dungeon.
- Defeat the Deku things in the order you were told before. You remember? It's 2-3-1. You'll get a hint about the boss. If you're ready. Proceed to the next room. Now it gets merry.
- To damage Gohma you'll need to wait until he falls on the ground and opens his eye. When the eye is red use a slingshot to hit it. You'll stun him. Now it's time to attack with your sword. Hit his eye as many times as you can. When he gets to the ceiling try to hit his eye there too. If you fail he'll let you have some larva-love. Try to prevent this. If you hit him while he's on ceiling he'll fall and you'll have enough time to hit his eye again a few times. Repeat this once again and you should have him dead.
- Take the heart container and step into the blue light. You'll be outside of the Deku Tree.
- Watch the cut scenes, follow the story. Link can no longer stay in the village. Saria meets you on the exit ( eastern path on the map) and let's you have her Ocarina. Your journey begins!
Hyrule Castle
- Welcome to the Hyrule Fields. Finish the talk with the owl and follow the easy pathway to the castle. Check your map if you don't know where the castle is. You can only enter it during the day, during the night you'll just have to stay away from evil zombie-like creatures. They can be quite dangerous but if you stay on the dirt path they won't come close to you. Once the castle's doors are down enter it.
- You're in the Hyrule Castle Market now. Walk around a bit, you'll find a shop with the Hylian Shield. DON'T BUY IT... yet. You'll get a discount later. A girl in the center of the market, Malon will tell you how her dad hasn't returned home from castle for some long time. While you're here don't forget to visit Shooting Gallery. Play the mini-game to get Deku Seed Bullet Bag upgrade. If you ever need more rupees, there's a room near the entrance of the castle where you can hit the vases infinite times for lots of rupees.
- Heart Piece During the night a woman in back alley will be looking for her dog. Go to the market area and get close to the gray dog, just below the open window. He'll follow you. Go back to the woman and claim your prize.
- Enter the pathway to the Castle. Watch the cut scene. Immediately go back to the Market. Back to the Castle again. Malon will be standing by the vines. You get an Egg from her. Now, climb the vines and drop into the hole with the ladder. Exit the door. Go all the way up but beware of the guards. Go all the way left so that you don't come into their line of sight. Head across the area covered with grass to the wall which has more vines on it. Climb it, go a bit further to the castle and drop into the water. Swim all the way to the castle's right side and climb onto the shore. You'll see a man sleeping there. If the Chicken has hatched, then use the chicken near him. If not, wait a bit longer. it usually takes a day for the chicken to hatch. Watch the cutscene. Move the blocks so you can enter the castle. Make sure it's daytime.
- You need to get to the princess now but many guards will stand in your way. 5 areas actually. Just be sure to time your movements well. Walk behind them and always care of the other guards - if they are not alone. Once you go through the fifth guard-crowded area you get to meet the princess Zelda. Watch the cut scenes, meet Ganondorf the main villain in the Zelda universe and learn Zelda's Lullaby. Now it's time to go to Kakariko but there's an optional quest for you.
- Epona's Song and Heart Piece: You need to visit Lon Lon Ranch located in the middle of the Hyrule Field. When entering the place, go towards the coral, then to the left and roll into the tree for a Skulltula to fall down. Get the token. Now enter the ranch. Take the door to the left. Speak to Talon and play the mini-game. After you have won the mini-game you get a bottle of Lon Lon Milk. Now go out, and to the central place of the ranch. Talk to Melon and she'll get you acquainted with Epona. Epona will be scared but after you learn the Epona's Song you'll be able to use the horse later in the game. With this song and a bottle any cow in the game will give you free Lon Lon milk. To get the Heart Piece go to the southwest corner of Lon Lon Ranch, enter the place and find the piece behind the boxes.
- Exit the ranch and make your way to the town of Kakariko - north-east on the map.
Kakariko Village
- Once you're in the village feel free to lurk around a bit.
- OPTIONAL The first house on the right is the House of Skulltula. Here, you can talk with Skulltulas. One will tell you that if you kill enough golden Skulltulas and bring their tokens to this place you'll get pretty rich. Actually, for every 10 golden tokens you'll get a reward, that is, until you collect 50 of them. If you are up to it, and get to collect all 100 that can be found throughout the game, you get the biggest of all rewards. More about this in the Sidequest section in the end of the walkthrough.
- OPTIONAL Talk to Anju near Impa's House. She'll ask you to collect her chickens. The first one is right by her. Pick it up and throw it into the pen. One is near the Death Mountain pathway. Pick it up and run across the top of the house close to the watchtower, jump off the end, and fly over to the fence near the Skulltula House to reach the third chicken. Throw both chickens off the ledge and take them to their pen. Next one is near the entrance to Kakariko and the sixth one stays hidden in a crate left of the entrance. Roll and break the crate. Grab the sixth one and jump off the ledge towards the rust colored house with the small fence. Throw the chicken the way you came from and climb the ladder. Collect the seventh and last chicken. Grab him, throw him over the fence and once you're on the other side collect both and get them in their pen. Once you've collected all seven you get an Empty Bottle.
- It's time to visit Kakariko Graveyard. The pathway is located right of the windmill. Go to the back of the graveyard and play Zelda's Lullaby near the big grave. Lightning bolt will hit the ground. Enter the hole.
- Kill all the monsters in the first room. The door will unlock. Enter the next room. Now careful around the monsters in this area. For now, you can't kill them. Just run to the other side of the room and read the inscription. You'll learn the Sun's Song. With it you can turn the night into day and vice-versa. Also, you can calm dead with it - freeze the monsters in this area and also some which you will encounter later in the game. Exit the crypt.
- Heart Piece: If you come to the graveyard between 18:00 and 21:00 you can play a grave-digging mini-game. Speak to the grave keeper and he'll explain how the tour works. You'll usually get a green or blue rupee, but sometimes you can get a red rupee worth 20. However if you dig where there's soil on the ground ( right of the royal tomb ) you'll find a Heart Piece.
- Talk to the guard on the gate behind which lies the pathway to Death Mountains. Show him the letter which princess gave to you before. He'll allow you to pass but before you do that, make sure to equip yourself with a Hylian Shield. You can get one in the Hyrule Market shop. You should also pick up the mask which guard requests for. It can be found in the Happy Mask Shop located in Hyrule Market. Bring it to him to get a 5 rupee profit. It will allow you to get many important upgrades and extras later in the game. Once you have the Hylian Shield equip it and proceed to the Death Mountain Trail.
- Follow the trail. Talk to the Gorons which you meet on the way to the top. You'll get to a fork. There's a large path to the left which you cannot take for now. Follow the small path to the right. You'll pass a circular group of stones. Beyond them lies the entrance to the Goron City.
Goron City
- When you enter the Goron City you'll come across many Gorons willing to talk. Most are usually sleepy or hungry. Get to the bottom floor by either jumping from top or by finding the stairs on each floor.
- Head for a room which has a rug in front of the door. It's locked. Play the Zelda's Lullaby while standing on the to get the door opened. Once inside, talk to the chief Darunia. He's in bad mood, oh well...
- Light a Deku Stick with the help of the torch in Darunia's room. Get outside and light the other torches. This causes the central jar to rotate and music to play. Light the bomb flowers so that you can enter the Goron shop. Nothing much here though.
- On the second level of the city you'll be able to find some boulders surrounded by bomb flowers. Light them up to open the pathway.
- Welcome to the Lost Woods.
Lost Woods
- Listen to the owl. Kaporea will tell you that the right way through the forest is found by listening to tunes. Only one way is the right one and that's the one where you can hear the song playing when you get close to it. Enter the right pathways a few times and you'll get into the Secret Forest Meadow.
- After entering the meadow you'll get to a closed gate. Approach it and you'll get attacked by a Wolfos. Defeat the monster and the path opens. Now, use shield to defend yourself from the well-known enemies and proceed to the next area. There will be two of these guarding the stairway. Deal with them and meet Saria. She'll teach you the Saria's Song.
- Go back and up the ladder to bypass the labyrinth. Jump into the hole in the middle to discover Fairy Fountain. You can continue with the story now or do some optional questing in the woods.
- OPTIONAL Go to any crossing in the woods and take the wrong path to get into Kokiri Forest. Now turn back and enter woods. Take the left path. Skull Kid is playing and dancing on a stump. Left again. You'll find yourself in the area with the bridge. Climb down the ladder and proceed to the area with a spilling monster. Use shield to reflect and catch him. Pay 40 rupees for the Deku Sticks upgrade.
- OPTIONAL Now get back to the room with Skull Kid and take the right path - to the Kokiri entrance, but go straight-forward. Use your slingshot to hit the thing hanging from the tree 3 times - hit the center. A Scrub appears and lets you have a Deku Seeds upgrade.
- Heart Piece: Below that place, a stump can be found. Stand on it. More Skull Kids appear. Use the Ocarina. Play what Skull Kids play. Repeat the process 3 times to get a Heart piece.
- Heart Piece: Go back to the place where the first Skull Kid was. Get onto the lower stump, and take out your Ocarina. He'll be amazed. Play the Saria's Song. You're awarded with a Heart Piece.
