Leather is a material made from the skin of an animal, usually a mammal. Hair is first removed from the skin. It is then tanned with chemicals, which may be vegetable-derived, mineral-derived or synthetic, to prevent it from rotting. Leather is most commonly made from the skin of cows, as it is both durable and flexible. Lamb skin is softer, but less durable. Deer skin is especially tough.
