A leaf blower is a gardening tool that blows air to move leaves, and other yard debris. They are available in many different varieties. You can get them in two stroke engines, four stroke engines, and electric. They also make a backpack style that has an attached hand held unit. Some of the leaf blowers have attached bags that actually suck the leaves in and shred them.
Pros and Cons
Leaf blowers are more efficient and less time consuming than your average rake would be. There are also cons to a leaf blower though. Leaf blowers are pretty loud and noisy. Some counties and cities have actually put a ban on leaf blowers due to their noise level. The two stroke engine powered leaf blowers [Air Pollution|pollutes]] the air more. Hence the reason the four stroke engine powered blower was recently introduced. The engine emissions could likely harm animals, plants, and wildlife in the surrounding area(s).
Safety
When using a leaf blower, safety precautions should be taken. As with anything electrical or with an engine. Any person within 50 feet of the blower being used should be wearing hearing protection, as well as eye & breathing protection. Safety glasses are a great way to protect your eyes. Things on the ground that could contribute to breathing issues include pollens and molds. If the operator or anyone near by has allergies, caution should be taken. Keep in mind, other things could be airborne due to a leaf blower, such as pesticides, animal feces, and viral diseases. Be sure to know how to refuel your leaf blower, so there isn't any spillage of the gasoline while refueling.
