  • Leadbelly was a popular singer, songwriter and guitarist born in 1888. He is remembered as a musical giant of the 20th Century. Many of his compositions and adaptations would later become part of the canon of American standards, including "Goodnight Irene" and "Rock Island Line." Perhaps because he was African-American, and a contemporary of many Blues greats, Leadbelly is often categorized as a Blues artist, but his work was much more diverse, and is more accurately described as folk. His songs have been covered by numerous other artists, including Nirvana, whose 1994 release Unplugged in New York, repopularized the Leadbelly tune "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"
