Laura Bush

Laura Bush met George W. Bush in 1977 and after only three months of dating, became his wife. The couple had twin daughters born in 1981 named Barbara and Jenna. On January 20, 2001, Laura Bush became the First Lady of the United States when her husband took office as President.

It was announced on January 7, 2009, that Laura Bush sold the rights to her up-and-coming memoirs to the publisher Scribner, a division of Simon & Schuster.EW.com: Laura Bush...the book? (January 7, 2009)

Works

Bush is a known advocate of education and other issues such as health care and human rights. She has traveled to places such as Afghanistan and Kabul to see the progress being made in their education programs. She is an international spokesperson for the United Nations Literacy Decade where she focuses on the importance of education throughout the world. She leads President Bush's "Helping America's Youth" initiative where she promotes programs to help kids avoid drugs, violence, sexual promiscuity and other risky behaviors that seem to be a trend among America's youth today. She also supports educational campaigns for breast cancer and heart disease and other health programs that encourage exercise, eating healthy foods, and preventive screenings.

2008 Convention

Laura Bush spoke at the 2008 Republican Convention in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota on September 1, 2008. The focus of the speech was to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Gustav, which reached the Gulf Coast the same day as the convention started.
