History
Latvian is closely related to Lithuanian. They aren't similar enough that speakers of one will necessarily understand the other, but they do share some linguistic similarities. Both have their roots in the same language, Proto Baltic, and may have evolved into their separate languages from an origin as different dialects of this common ancestor. The Latvian vocabulary was influenced by German, Polish, Swedish, and Russian languages, all countries that at one point in time had occupied Latvia. Latvian became the official language of Latvia in 1989, two years before it achieved independence with the fall of the Soviet Union.Languages Of The World: Introduction Languages Of The World: Structure-
