Lasagna is a pasta dish that is prepared by first boiling the pasta and then layering the noodles in a casserole dish along with other ingredients to all be baked together in an oven.
Several variations exist, but they all have alternating layers of lasagna noodles..http://www.inmamaskitchen.com/FOOD_IS_ART/pasta/aboutlasagna.html Lasagna noodles are about two inches wide; some commercially prepared lasgna noodles have and ruffled edges. Usual alternating layers are cheese and tomato sauce. Though the traditional recipe contains a bolognese, or meat sauce, vegetarian varieties are common.
Lasagna Background and History
In 2003, some British researchers who were studying The Forme of Cury, a medieval cookbook in the British Museum, published a claim that lasagna was in fact of English, rather than Italian, origin. Their reasoning was that if the recipe was in such an old cookbook, it must have sprung up locally. It is reported that the Italian embassy in London publically responded that whatever this old dish was called, it was not lasagne as we make it.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3067455.stm
Antonio Piscopo, a restauranteur in Bristol, England, is credited with the theory that probably the Romans brought pasta to England from Italy.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3067455.stm This would have happened long before the recipe was written in that medieval cookbook. The Romans came to England from Italy in 55 BC.http://www.britannia.com/history/timelines.html
