Larry Craig

  • Republican Larry Craig is the senior U.S. senator from Idaho. He fell under public scrutiny for an incident in a Minnesota airport bathroom that led to his 2007 arrest for lewd conduct. Craig initially agreed to vacate his Senate seat after the press got wind of the scandal, but later reversed his decision and decided to remain in office until the end of his term, which comes in January of 2009. He will then be replaced by former Idaho governor Jim Risch.
  • Early Life

    Craig was the student body president of the University of Idaho, where he received his B.A. in political science. He became a Private First Class in the Idaho Army National Guard in the early 1970s before beginning his political career in the Idaho Senate.
  • Scandal

    In June of 2007, Craig was arrested in a men's room at the Minneapolis airport for lewd conduct. Craig plead guilty to disorderly conduct on August 8. When the press reported the case, he announced his resignation from the Senate effective September 30, 2007, but later attempted to vacate his conviction and reversed his decision to resign.
