Laparoscopic surgery is a technique in which operations are performed through a small incision with the use of small cameras and thin instruments. During a surgery using this set of techniques, plastic tubes that are called ports, are placed into and through the small incisions and provides access for the surgeon to accomplish the task. In the early 1900's laparoscopy was performed only on animals. When safer techniques were developed by the 1960's, laparoscopy procedures were used primarily for diagnostic testing. Some of the first operations performed were tubal ligations and gallbladder removal.
