Lansing is the capital of Michigan and the sixth-largest city in the state. It has served as the capital since 1847 and is also home to Michigan State University.
History
Lansing was originally founded in 1835 by two men from Lansing, New York. Although the pair did not stay in the area, they did bring residents to the area in the late 1840s. The then Lansing Township was selected as the state capital in 1847 after the Michigan House of Representatives decided the capital be moved from Detroit. Located on the banks of the Grand River, the city experienced a major flood in 1904, which resulted in one death.
Michigan State University
East Lansing is home to the Big Ten college Michigan State University. Just behind the government of Michigan, the university is the second largest employer in the area. The school is home to over 18,000 students and nearly 5,000 faculty and is regarded for its law and agriculture programs.
